The elephantoid light. Literally speaking, this elephant in the room is one that cannot be ignored. Standing 163 centimetres tall (that’s over 1 1/2 metres), Elephant is the life-size creation of Isidro Ferrer’s kindred Funny Farm character—Smelly Fant. An inspired light sculpture, Elephant is certain to bring a smile to every face and arouse a feeling of wonderment. To produce the Elephant light, craftsman Manolo Martin employed the ‘vareta’ technique (used in creating the life-size Fish). The result is a handsome handmade wooden structure: an elephantoid lamp with big ears, a trunk, legs and body. A soft and cheerful light is diffused through Elephant’s natural wood veneer inner lining. Perfect for a myriad of public and private settings, Elephant is happiest when surrounded by loving and curious individuals. Each Life Size piece is unique, as evidenced by the artisan’s handcraftsmanship in each one of them, the finish of each one is different and the raw materials used, without hiding their original nature, highlight their uniqueness, providing a coherent discourse with the artist’s intention.

LZF is a story of people, wood and light and the result of a peculiar encounter between two strangers. When they met, they both loved their hands and what they were capable of doing with them. Both shared a passion for the arts, for ideas, and experimenting. They coincided in their way of living and their very distinct view of the world. With an absolute belief that everything you feel can be materialised, they began to experiment. Till one night, playing with some wood veneers, they managed to envelop light. LZF was born.
From sketches made while travelling on the pages of his ever-present diary, to campaigns for government and in the field of graphic art, nothing is alien to Isidro Ferrer. A one-time actor, he is now an acclaimed illustrator and graphic designer, and winner of the much sought-after Spanish National Design Award in 2002. A fervent illustrator and designer —Isidro created the cast of Funny Farm characters and the life-size Elephant and Fish for LZF— his ability to devour what is seen and then create art, may in fact mean he has one of the largest appetites on the planet. Mariví Calvo is the main partner and creative director of LZF, a company she co-founded together with Sandro Tothill in 1994. Designing and making handmade wood veneer lighting fixtures, LZF would grow to become an internationally acclaimed concern. An experienced avant-garde artist, Mariví has developed and directed all aspects of LZF’s creative art department. She has designed a number of lamps that are emblematic of LZF’s imaginative approach to lighting, including the Guijarros, Gea and Cosmos collections, and the majestic Candelabroas well as collaborating in the creation of the Totem and Armadillo and Koi lamps. In addition, Mariví is responsible for the design of every LZF exhibit and creates the company’s prizewinning campaigns.
